How do i stop my dog barking?
I have 3 dogs, The oldest, a border collie, barks at the door and whenever anyone walks past the house, this sets off one of the others (her 2 year old daughter) and the 1yr old German Shepard will join in sometimes but not every time.
i want to know how I can stop the oldest one barking (as she is the worst and the others only do it because she does) I have looked into those anti barking collers, but they are not within my budget and seem cruel?
all and any ideas will be greatfully recieved?
There are 2 ways I’ve used, one is a water spray, the other a plastic bottle filled with stones. As soon as the dog barks you spray them with water or shake the bottle which shocks them into being quiet long enough for you to give a No or Quiet command in a firm tone. Then tell them to sit whilst you open the door. Praise should be given as soon as the dog sits. If you can, get a friend to help you and that way you can repeat the exercise several times. Once you can control the barking at the door then have your friend walk past the window and if the dog barks use the same command. She should quickly learn what is acceptable as Collies are extremely intelligent. She’s obviously the Alpha female of her pack and the others will learn from her so if she has any other bad habits use the same methods to teach her what she cant do!
The dog I have now thinks being sprayed with water is a game so I tried the bottle!
Try and stay calm when training her and look up some of the dog training sites or find a Sheep Dog Forum and talk to other owners of the breeds you have. Your Shepherd for example needs slightly different handling to the 2 Collies so who better to ask than the ‘experts’.
